Space Heater Safety in Flagstaff

A 1,500-watt heater essentially owns a 15-amp circuit. Why extension cords are the most common failure, the clearance rules that matter, and when a room needs a dedicated circuit instead.

Space heaters are practically standard equipment up here. Cold bedroom over the garage, drafty addition, a shop that the furnace never reaches — everyone has one somewhere. They are also, year after year, one of the leading causes of home heating fires. Almost all of that risk comes down to two things: what the heater is plugged into, and what's sitting near it.

One heater, one outlet, one circuit

A typical 1,500-watt heater draws about 12.5 amps. A standard 15-amp circuit is rated for 12 amps of continuous load. That means a single space heater essentially owns the circuit — and most bedroom circuits also carry lamps, chargers, a TV, and often the outlets in the next room too.

  • Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, never a power strip or extension cord.
  • Don't run two heaters on the same circuit.
  • If the breaker trips or the plug and cover plate feel warm, stop using that outlet and have it looked at.

Extension cords are the single most common failure. They're usually undersized for a sustained 12-amp draw, they heat up under blankets and rugs, and they get pinched under furniture.

Three feet, hard floor, nothing above

Keep three feet of clearance in every direction from bedding, curtains, upholstered furniture, laundry, and stacked boxes. Set the heater on a hard, level surface — carpet and rugs both insulate the unit and add fuel. Never use one to dry boots or gloves by setting them on top.

Buy the features that matter

Look for a current safety-lab listing, tip-over shutoff, and overheat protection. Older units without tip-over switches belong in the trash rather than the guest room. Inspect the cord each fall for cracking, stiffness, or a discolored plug, and replace the unit rather than the cord.

When the real answer is a circuit, not a heater

If a room needs a space heater every single winter, that's a building problem being patched with an appliance. A dedicated 20-amp circuit for a properly sized wall heater, a mini-split, or electric baseboard is safer, quieter, and cheaper to run than an appliance you have to remember to turn off. Shops and garages in particular should be on their own circuits sized for the actual load.

When to bring in a professional

Warm outlets, scorch marks, repeated tripping, or a room that needs supplemental heat every winter are all reasons to add capacity rather than keep improvising.
