Thirty-five miles west on I-40, Williams keeps a working downtown alive on tourism — and most of that downtown is a century old behind the storefronts.
About Williams
Williams calls itself the Gateway to the Grand Canyon, and it has earned it: the Grand Canyon Railway leaves from the depot downtown every morning, and Bearizona sits just east of town off the interstate. Population is around 3,200 year-round, which swells hard between May and October.
The core of town is the Route 66 couplet — Railroad Avenue running one way, Bill Williams Avenue the other — lined with neon-signed motels, diners, and gift shops that have been operating continuously since the 1950s and earlier. South of the tracks, the residential streets climb toward Bill Williams Mountain; the Dogtown Lake and Kaibab National Forest edges hold cabins and seasonal places.
At just under 7,000 feet, Williams gets real winter — it's one of the snowiest towns in Arizona — and a lot of the housing is small, older, and heated in whatever way somebody decided on decades ago.

The electrical reality of an old Route 66 town
Commercial work downtown means opening walls that have been added onto four times. We routinely find 60-amp services feeding buildings that now run commercial refrigeration, point-of-sale, and a kitchen; knob-and-tube remnants abandoned in place; and neon and sign circuits spliced into whatever was nearest. Motel and restaurant owners here need code correction that doesn't shut the business down for a week, and we scope it that way.
On the residential side, it's panel upgrades, heat tape circuits that actually hold up to a Williams winter, and well and septic pump wiring on the properties outside the town limits toward Parks and Garland Prairie. Cabin owners who are only up part of the year also ask us for freeze protection and shutoff-friendly wiring so a place can be left cold safely.
