Plenty of smart devices save you nothing. They add an app to something that worked fine with a switch. A smaller group genuinely lowers a bill, and they all share one trait: they control something big, or they turn something off that you would have left on. A smart thermostat, if you let it work
Heating is the largest line on most local bills, and our big day-to-night temperature swing is exactly what setback scheduling is good at. The savings come from the schedule and from not heating an empty house — not from the app. Set it up once, let geofencing or occupancy handle the rest, and resist overriding it daily.
Check that your system has a C-wire before buying. Many older Flagstaff furnaces don't, and adding one is a small job worth doing properly.
Water heater timers and heat-pump models
An electric water heater is usually the second-biggest load in the house. A timer or smart controller that avoids reheating a tank overnight and during peak-rate hours can measurably move a bill. If yours is near end of life, a heat-pump water heater is the bigger win — just confirm the circuit and the space it needs first.
Lighting controls, mostly for the outside

Whole-home energy monitoring
A panel-mounted monitor won't save a watt by itself, but it shows you which circuits are costing you. Almost every homeowner who installs one finds something surprising — a heat tape left energized in June, a garage freezer running constantly, a well pump short-cycling. Fixing one of those often pays for the device.
What to skip
- Smart plugs on small electronics — the standby draw is pennies.
- Smart bulbs in fixtures already on a switch you use normally.
- Anything that requires a cloud subscription to keep basic control.
When to bring in a professional
Most of these are easy installs, but the ones that touch the panel, a water heater circuit, or a furnace need a proper circuit and a C-wire done right.
