Most people picture a lightning strike when they hear "surge." Direct strikes do happen here, especially during monsoon season, but the majority of surge damage comes from smaller, more frequent events: utility switching, a transformer restoring after an outage, and large motors in your own house cycling on and off. The damage is cumulative, and it shows up as electronics that die younger than they should.
Surge protection works in layers
A single power strip protects whatever is plugged into it and nothing else. Real protection is layered:
- Type 2, at the panel. Wired into the service panel, it clamps the big incoming surges before they reach any branch circuit — including hardwired equipment like furnaces, well pumps, mini-splits, and range electronics that can't be plugged into a strip.
- Type 3, at the outlet. Good strips and receptacle-level devices catch what's left and handle surges generated inside the house.
Neither layer replaces the other. The panel device does the heavy lifting; the point-of-use devices protect the most sensitive gear.
It only works as well as your grounding
A surge protective device diverts energy to ground. If the grounding electrode system is undersized, corroded, or the bonding is incomplete — common in older northern Arizona homes — the device has nowhere good to send that energy. This is why we check grounding and bonding as part of any surge installation rather than just hanging a box on the panel.
These devices wear out on purpose
The components inside sacrifice themselves absorbing energy. A device that has taken a hard hit, or many small ones over years, stops protecting — which is why they have status indicators. Check the light occasionally, especially after a storm season with a lot of activity, and replace the device when it goes dark. A protector nobody looks at is a protector you're only assuming still works.
What it's actually worth
Add up what's vulnerable in a modern house: HVAC control boards, well pump controller, EV charger, appliances with electronics, networking, TVs, computers, solar inverter. A panel device plus a proper grounding check is usually a small fraction of a single one of those replacements, and it's the kind of thing best installed while the panel is already open for other work.
When to bring in a professional
If you've already lost equipment to a storm, or your protector's indicator is out, the protection is gone until it's replaced.
