Lighting Installation: Getting Light Right in a Room

Most rooms that feel wrong are lit wrong. One fixture in the middle of the ceiling makes shadows in every place you actually do something. Good lighting isn't about more light — it's about putting light where the task is and controlling the rest.

Three layers, in this order

• Task — under-cabinet in the kitchen, a fixture over the sink, a reading light. This is what makes a room usable.
• Ambient — the general fill. Recessed cans, a flush mount, or bounced light.
• Accent — art, shelving, a fireplace. Optional, but this is what makes a room feel finished.

Color temperature and CRI matter more than brightness

Stick to 2700K–3000K in living spaces; it reads as warm and comfortable. Save 3500K–4000K for garages, shops, and laundry. Mixing temperatures in one sightline is the mistake people notice without being able to name it. And look for CRI 90 or better — it's the difference between skin and wood looking right or looking flat.

Recessed lighting done properly

Space cans by roughly half the ceiling height, keep them 24–30 inches off the wall for wall-wash, and use IC-rated, air-tight housings anywhere they penetrate an insulated ceiling — which in a Flagstaff winter is a real energy issue, not a technicality. Modern canless LEDs simplify retrofits considerably in existing ceilings.

Dimming that doesn't buzz or flicker

LED flicker is almost always a mismatch between the dimmer and the driver. Use LED-rated dimmers, check the fixture's compatibility list, and don't mix brands of bulb on one dimmer. Keep the total load within the dimmer's LED rating, which is much lower than its incandescent rating.

Outdoors, less is more

Flagstaff is a dark-sky community, and shielded, downward-facing, warm fixtures are both required in many cases and simply better lighting.
